Maybe your kids have moved out in the past few years or you’re planning to retire in the near future. Moving can be a daunting idea if you’ve lived in your current home for decades! Here’s a few recommendations:
Waiting too long can be a crucial mistake when downsizing, especially if the decision comes out of necessity instead of a lifestyle choice. Try shooting for a six month lead time to secure a new living arrangement before illness or injury speed up your big move.
Sorting Through Your Belongings
Ask for help when deciding what to keep, sell, store, or donate. You may find some friends or relatives would love to take that over sized dining room set or riding lawnmower off your hands!
Attitude is Everything
It can be overwhelming starting over in a new home! Remember that downsizing isn’t getting rid of unneeded belongings but reflecting with gratitude on the memories shared in the space itself. Sometimes a photo the object or space can make the transition easier. Suzanne Stavert, author of The Empty Nesters blog, says it best: “It is so refreshing to realize ‘what we really need’ is our family and friends. The ‘stuff’ is so secondary.”
